FK Balkanski (Serbian Cyrillic: ФK Бaлкaнcки) is a football club based in Dimitrovgrad, Serbia.

History

The Club was founded in 1924 as FK Balkan. Club changed its name several times before World War II. After the World War II (1945) the club was re-founded as Asen Balkanski, which is the name of Bulgarian communist Warld War II hero. In late 1950s club changed its name again to Sportist, but in 1960 the name was reverted to Asen Balkanski. Finally, in 1994 club's assembly changed clubname to Fudbalski klub "Balkanski" (shorter FK Balkanski), which means "Balcanic", both on Serbian and Bularian language. That's important because Dimitrovgrad is a town in South-Eastern Serbia with Bulgarian ethnic majority. Before the Warld War II club competed in Pirot District League among teams from Pirot (Jedinstvo), Babušnica (Lužnica) and Bela Palanka (Jedinstvo). After the War Asen Balkanski mostly played in 5th and 6th level of SFR Yugoslavia football. In 1993 Balkanski promoted to Niška zona (4th level of competition in FR Yugoslavia), than in 1997 was promoted to Srpska Liga Niš (3rd level), but played only one season and relegated the next year. Last few years are known as "Balkanski expansion". Balkanski with head coach Bratislav Mitrović promoted to Srpska Liga East in 2007 and finished its 1st season in 3rd level in 7th place. The next season, 2008-09, the club finished in 6th place with Radivoje Manić, ex FR Yugoslavia national player and Korean golden booth holder as head-coach. In the end of the 2009-10 season the club was relegated.
